Dos and Don’ts When Planning Your New Website Website design advice for businesses in Auckland, Northland and nationwide
In October 2018, On Design completed a new website and graphics project for Northland building business Sunshine Homes and Cabins. Delivering the client the perfect website meant On Design needed to achieve the following: Make the website discoverable in the top rankings for Google searchesGive the website an upbeat flavour with lots of yellow, associating the products with Sunshine’s name, brand and imageMake it easy for readers and customers look at projects, view the relevant numbers and understand each product at a glanceRespond to search engine optimisation needs – make sure the website heeded Google’s new requirement that all websites are https rather than http There was also a practical problem many websites face: the designer of the former website had made it hard to update, meaning when Sunshine Homes and Cabins wanted to amend prices, product or content, they were virtually locked out. Evan Morgan of OnDesign began the project with a routine cost-free sit-down with the client, talking through a list of questions to show what OnDesign could offer. The discovery meeting included looking at a range of existing examples for everyone on both sides of the table to agree on what was best for Sunshine’s brand. Providing a bespoke, customised website which allows the website’s owner to make changes was the priority. “With templated websites, often it’s not that easy to change the design, usually,” Evan explains. “With my websites, it’s easy to change the design and layout where needed by the customer.”“I also offer content management system logins to the people I work with.” The time frame for website design projects typically ranges from 15 hours to 30 hours. Adding the right layers and having the website display perfectly on tablet, phone and desktop was a challenge, as was the need to give the website a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate. This is because the Google search metacrawler now gives priority to websites which have SSL and are known as HTTPS instead of HTTP. On Design is all about staying on top of such innovations and trends, whether looking at a website for a small business or large. “It’s all constantly changing so you’ve got to keep up with it.”Being adaptable once again comes back to tailormade solutions and designs that work on billboards, computer screens, and printed on pens and paper. “My websites are bespoke and not templates. That gives me greater flexibility.” On Design is a specialist Website & Graphic Design Studio based in Whangarei, New Zealand.
